Does God have a beginning?

Does God have a beginning?

Question:

I believe in God, but something in my mind keeps asking, if everything has a beginning then what is God’s beginning?

Salaam alykum,

God is beyond our comprehension. The Qur’an says of God the following:

“there is nothing like unto Him” [42:11]

However, that’s probably not going to prove anything to you, so let me put it to you this way:

You are, I’m assuming, an adult. So, you probably can drive a car, and if not, then you are capable of the act, right?

Could an ant ever perceive of driving a car? Does an ant have the mental capacity to understand that?

Of course not, but that doesn’t mean that it is impossible, it simply means that our actions, relative to an ant, are unfathomable to the ant, but normal to ourselves.

So, since you believe in God, and we both do, then we both have the assumption that God exists, so if God exists and thereby has the ability to create anything and everything, could we possibly ever attempt to comprehend an Entity with no beginning and no end?

I mean, peoples lives change when they have a child, literally, the second they see what they made, so if that’s the extent of what we can make ourselves, we are dealing with God, who can create the very concept of existence.

So, of course it will be difficult, if not impossible for us to even comprehend the concept of infinity applied to anything, because we are mere creatures, ones that have limitations and yet you are trying to understand and rationalize something that does not have limitations? Don’t beat yourself up.

I do not understand the point of having a living room that is kept in the sort of pristine condition that makes me think of some cryogenic stasis from a weird sci-fi movie, but that is what my mother does, so what chance do I have in attempting to understand the abilities of God?

Does that make sense? If not, please ask me follow up questions, insha Allah.

I pray this reaches you and your families in the best of health and Iman, insha Allah
