I’m new to Islam, any suggestions?

Question:

Salam 🙂 I am new to islam and so overwhelmed by everything i have to learn – any tips?

Wa alykum as-salaam,

I’d suggest sticking to reading The Qur’an, and I’d suggest reading the translation by Muhammad Asad, as the commentary (tafsir) of his is superior to any other English version I have read.

I’d also suggest reading John Esposito’s Islam: The Straight Path, as it provides a very concise explanation of many aspects of Islam.

For answers to many basic questions, I’d suggest the two following works:

Al Maqasid by Imam Nawawi, which is a manual for many of the basic rules of various aspects of Islam, as far as prayer and many other issues goes. To read a translated version, via pdf, click here.

I’d also suggest a practical guide to the various rules and regulations found in Islam by Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi called The Lawful and Prohibited in Islam, which you can read, in its entirety, here.

I feel like this is a good place to start, and that if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask, insha Allah.
