Are Muslims Required to Live in Muslim Countries?

Question:

as salaam alaikum, some people have been telling me it’s obligatory to move from non-Muslim lands to Muslim lands. They talk about Muhammad (pbuh) and his hijra. But Medina wasn’t a Muslim land, was it? I mean it is now, but back when the sahaba moved there, weren’t Muslims still a minority? Or am I not understanding something fundamental here….

Wa alykum as-salaam,

Obligatory? Obligatory is “Fard” or “Wajib” and I have never read anything like this, and it would make little sense as the early Muslims quickly left Arabia and settled into lands that were not “Muslim lands” when they entered and they stayed (population-wise) as non-Muslim for long periods until the populations converted to Islam.

When The Prophet left to Yathrib (later known as Medina) it was not a Muslim land as The Constitution of Medina illustrates quite clearly that it contained many different groups of people, so I do not understand, but not even because of that example, but because of how the early Muslims were forced to flee Mecca and went to Abyssinia, which would be a “non-Muslim land.”

So, I’m sorry, I am confused at this statement and without any evidence, and from looking at basic facts of early Islamic history, I am unsure as to where someone would get the evidence for this.

I pray this reaches you and your families in the best of health and Iman, insha Allah.
