I’m a lazy and unmoitvated Muslim, what can I do?

Question:

Assalam alaykum. I don’t know how to phrase this properly but I’m a very lazy and unmotivated Muslim. I fast, but do not pray all five salahs and barely even read the Qur’an. When I do pray, I don’t feel that it’s coming from the heart, and my mind wanders elsewhere while I’m praying. I feel horrible about all of this and know that I am not on the right path. How can I fix myself that I pray and read Qur’an from my heart and become a better Muslim over all? Jazak Allah khair

Wa alykum as-salaam,

First things first, stop stressing. The last time stress helped anyone, was the Caveman, as stress was a by-product of not having access to food, and thus, when we stress, our body holds onto our fat, preparing for lean times.

Shout out to Dr. Oz for that fun fact.

Furthermore, I think the issue is that you are expecting a magical experience when you pray and you think that praying to God should come from some place of reverence for God. I know plenty of people who are like that, but I’m not one of them, and while I admire them, if you’re like me, you have to figure out a different way.

You need to realize that prayer is for you, that fasting is for you, that all your religious obligations are for you, and that you are the one who benefits, and thus, by improving yourself, that is how you can show your dedication to God, and soon, you will find that the improvements you see as a result of your actions to be the best reason to thank God five times a day, and probably many other times after that.

For my advice relative to prayer, check out this post I wrote a while back, which you can find at my index page, among other articles that you might find helpful, insha Allah.

Don’t stress, just be selfish about this stuff, because I promise, once you start giving yourself that discipline you’ll see why you should do these things, and the meaning behind them will change.

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask me, insha Allah.

I pray that this reaches you and your families in the best of health and Iman, insha Allah.
